Birth Space, Safe Place: Emotional Well-Being through Pregnancy and Birth

by Adela Stockton

[2009. Forres, Scotland: Findhorn Press, 112 pages, paperback.]

[Review first published in Midwifery Today Issue 91, Autumn 2009, © 2009, Midwifery Today, Inc. Review by Jan Tritten.]

This little 100-page book is absolutely packed with helpful information for parents. Practitioners will also find it helpful. It has a superior resource list for further reading on just about everything related to birth. The author’s style is like an enjoyable, informative talk with a friend who knows a lot about birth. The bonus is that Stockton is also a childbirth homeopath. She includes excellent advice on homeopathy for various issues and problems in pregnancy and birth.

The subtitle is accurate as Stockton does help women focus on emotional factors including an important chapter on “clearing the past.” The book is spiced with case studies and women’s stories. Women’s stories are some of the best teachers we have, especially around pregnancy and birth.

Stockton discusses such a wide variety of topics, from optimal fetal positioning and breech to pain and parenting, making this a lovely little book a real gem and a must for midwives’ lending libraries (after they have read it first, of course).

Reviewer Jan Tritten is the publisher and editor-in-chief of Midwifery Today magazine.
